York Independent Living and Travel Skills (YILTS)

York Independent Living and Travel Skills Training (YILTS) offers travel training to young people aged 11-25 years old who have an EHCP or a Statement of Special Needs.

YILTS long term aim is to assess the travel skills of all young people who currently have CYC funded transport, usually a taxi, to get to school or college. We aim to ensure that training is provided at a time that is right for each young person and know that this will vary depending on the nature of a student’s SEND and the route that they need to travel.

We receive referrals from a range of professionals and we regularly attend Annual Review/EHCP meetings in school, particularly when students are in Year 6 or Year 11. Here we will discuss travel plans with parents and young people as they prepare for the transition to secondary school or a further education college.

At Applefields School we plan support with the school and the Connexions service as the Year 13 and 14 students prepare to leave so that travel training is part of the ‘moving on’ process for all those who can access it. We work too with older students as they leave college and prepare to go onto further training courses or personal education programmes, or in some cases, move into adult social care.

We may also be asked to assess your child's travel skills if you request City of York Council funded transport.

YILTS provides a carefully planned programme to support young people to manage timetables, plan their route, become safe pedestrians, become familiar with being ‘out and about’ around other people, and understand what to do when something unexpected happens.

We carry out our practical sessions with a student for up to a year. If after this time the student is not ready for independent travel we will suggest a delay and hope to get involved at a later stage. We will also provide bus passes for successful students as they begin to travel on their own
