The Specialist Learning & Employment Adviser Team (SLEAT) has created a helpful booklet entitled 'What's next? Life, learning and work' which outlines the options for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities, particularly those with Education Health and Care Plans.
We are a team of Advisers who support young people who are in the care of the Local Authority or have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Our focus is helping young people to take their next step towards employment by providing advice and guidance on how to access appropriate education, training or employment opportunities.
We work with young people aged 13-25 years who are on roll at a secondary school in York (year 9 and above), attend further and specialist colleges or have a personalised learning programme.
We also provide consultancy advice to local Secondary Schools and Further Education providers to enable them to provide careers advice and guidance to their students.
We provide confidential and impartial information, advice, and guidance to help young people to develop the skills they need to make choices that support their employment plans. We work directly with the young person or parent/carer in the lead up to them making key decisions about their next step – in the world of education, health and care, these are often referred to as ‘review’, ‘progression’ or ‘transition’ stages.
We take time to find out about the young person’s hopes and ambitions and then offer appropriate support. This will likely be through individual guidance sessions (in person or virtually) and may also include helping them to plan visits or taster sessions with different services.
Examples include, local colleges and other Further Education providers, apprenticeship and vocational training providers, supported internship and work experience programmes.
Specialist Learning and Employment Advisers also work closely with members of the Local Authority’s SEND and transition teams - this team includes support from social workers, care managers and the York Independent Living and Travel Skills (YILTS) service.
