Sensory Impairment (Hearing and Visual Impairment)

There are lots of local and national support services for advice and information about sensory impairments. The list below is not a comprehensive list but information about specific support charities and organisations about our most frequently asked about additional needs and disabilities.

Hearing Impairment

The City of York Council's Deaf and Hearing Support Team work with children and young people from birth up to 25 years old, with all degrees of hearing loss from fluctuating mild hearing loss to permanent profound deafness.

Vision Impairment

The City of York Council's Vision Support Team work with children and young people with reduced vision whose sight cannot be corrected solely by the wearing of glasses. The team works closely with parents, health staff and specialist agencies to support schools in making provisions for visually impaired children. The types of support varies according to the needs of the child and their degree of vision loss. Support could include the provision of specialist equipment and or modified materials.

York Special Educational Needs Service 

York special educational needs service has a wealth of information online. This includes transport, school services and statements. The service also consists of the Specialist Teaching Team. The team is made up of Autism support; Deaf and Hearing support; Physical Difficulties and Medical Needs support and Visual Impairment support.
