There are lots of local and national support services for advice and information about social emotional and mental health difficulties. The list below is not a comprehensive list but information about specific support charities and organisations about our most frequently asked about additional needs and disabilities.

There is more helpful information within York's Local Offer. To find age specific services please visit the 0-5 years, primary years (5-11), secondary years (11-16) and growing up and leaving school (14 - 25 years) sections.

York Parent Carers Forum (YPCF) Previously CANDI  

YPCF aims to enable disabled children and their families in York and the surrounding area to lead full and meaningful lives through seeking to improve services and by providing informal social support.

The Island

The Island is a registered charity that has been operating since August 2007. It offers support to vulnerable 8 – 13 year-olds in York who are struggling to cope at home, at school, or in the wider community, or who are experiencing difficult transitions in their lives.





Minding Minds


York Special Educational Needs Service

York Special Educational Needs Service has a wealth of information online. This includes transport, school services and statements. The service also consists of the Specialist Teaching Team. The team is made up of Autism support; Deaf and Hearing support; Physical Difficulties and Medical Needs support and Visual Impairment support. Young Minds

Young minds are leading the fight for a future where all young minds are supported and empowered, whatever the challenges. They support young people to ensure that they get the best possible mental health support and have the resilience to overcome life’s difficulties.



Bereavement is a very difficult emotion for anyone to have to try and deal with and even more so when children and young people are involved. Knowing how to approach the subject can be very difficult and explaining how someone could/ will react can also be challenging.
