Children and Young Peoples Wheelchair Forum

The Children and Young Peoples Wheelchair Forum is a group for young people who live in the Vale of York to share their views and make changes to services. This group will help to ensure services are the best they can be, to support children and young people who use wheelchairs.

The group is for any child or young person who uses a wheelchair, aged 5-25 years of age.

To get involved, email Laura at jointpartnership@york.gov.uk

Access Around the City of York

Some members of the group said that some footpaths are not accessible and this can be frustrating. Specifically for one family, a country side walk has recently been changed meaning the family are unable to access it in their wheelchair.

The group lead is going to follow this up with the appropriate team at the council, to see what the rules are about making changes to pathways, specifically stiles.

NRS Communication

Some families in the group said that NRS' communication with families was irregular, often late and limited.

We worked with NRS, and they are now (December 21) embedding a clinical review phone call.

Training for Schools

Members of the group felt that school staff who work with wheelchair users would benefit from from training from NRS colleagues. This training should inclide:

- Things to look out for on wheelchairs that could be going wrong

- Small fixes

- Advice on different types of wheelchairs

An NRS colleague who joins us at the meeting that this training is in development and should be in place in schools in the new year (2022).
