At the City of York Council, we value the involvement of children and young people when making changes to services. We want to ensure that any changes we make, are directed by you, needed by you and changed by you.
In York, there are a range of young peoples groups, all who support changes to services for other children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities. This page will show you all of the groups we currently work with and current and previous participation projects we have been doing.
Access4All is a young persons group for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
We meet once every month, and support City of York Council, Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (NHS) and other agencies to make changes to the services that children receive in York.
Young people can share their views in a comfortable environment, and together we will work towards making changes.
Come along and share your views
Are you a young person who uses a wheelchair?
Your views are important and will help us make change for other children and young people who use wheelchairs and live in and around York.
• When? We meet every three months.
• Where? It will be online via zoom
• Who will be there? This group is made up of people children and young people (and their carers/parents), people from the NHS, the local council and the people who provide you with your wheelchair.
How do I join?
If you would like to come along, please email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
CAMHS York welcome the input of children and young people and their families. We have established 2 co-creation/participation groups, one with our young people and one with their parents. The groups have recently helped shape the design of our new building, interviewed new staff members and helped inform some of the new policies and risk assessments since our move. The groups are held monthly.
If you are interested in joining and helping to shape the service please contact Orca House on 01904 420950 and one of the team will get back to you with dates for meetings.
Cogs and Engines is a young persons participation project that runs across a range of schools in York. We wanted to make sure that children with Special Educational Needs and or Disabilities (SEND) have their voices heard in every aspect of their lives.
We wanted children and young people to speak their views within their school - Cogs and Engines are groups set up in schools, like school councils but that allow those with SEND to share their opinions and views.
Have a chat with your school and see if they have a running Cogs and Engines group and see what they have been up to.
York Inspirational Kids (YIKS) Post 16 Group is a leisure group for young people aged 16 or over. This group is run by Ruth at York Inspirational Kids, however we have joined up with Ruth and the group, to make sure that the voices of young people over the age of 16 are being heard and their views are acted upon.
To get involved with the post 16 group, email Ruth at email@example.com
The 12 Moves to an Inclusive City Project was launched at the start of 2020. This piece of work aimed to hear the voices of young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities from across the city. Many services and agencies from across the city are now working on different 'moves' that young people told us needed to change.
