Applying for a school place

Top Tip - You should read these two guides before submitting your application.

Guide for Parents

When applying for a school place at a local authority secondary school or an academy, you will need to complete your application form in the autumn term of year 6 before your child is due to start secondary school. It has to be submitted between 12th September and 31st October.

Applications can be made online or by completing an application form available on the website.

Parent/carers can state a preference for up to five schools. Schools’ admissions policies may vary and will consider a number of things, including where you live. Find out more about school admission policies.

Top Tip - When making your preferences, remember to think about other children in your family, as there is no guarantee that all your children will be given a place at the school you choose for your disabled child or child with additional needs.

Applications are made to the local authority and not to individual schools, although you may let a school know that you hope to apply for a place there.

All children will receive an offer of a place from 1st March, when your child is in year 6.

Top Tip- Look out for the letter from the admissions team at the start of the autumn term. It is sent to all parents of children in year 6, together with information about York secondary school open evenings. It is essential that you visit them to make an informed choice.

A young person with a statement of special educational needs

Parents of pupils with Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCPs) don’t need to complete the standard admission process for secondary school. Instead, in year 5 you will need to tell your child's primary school SENCo or Headteacher which school you would like your child to attend, following your visits to schools.

You can also contact the SEN team at CYC.

The SEN team will consult the schools about available places considering the school's own admissions criteria. In all cases the SEN team will confirm a secondary school in your child’s EHCP by 15th February.

For more information please see the ‘Transfer to Secondary School Booklet’, produced by York SEND Information, Advice and Support Service (formerly York Parent Partnership Service), by visiting The SENDIASS Website
