You will receive a reply letting you know if you are eligible or not, or if further information is required, within 10 working days.

Where can eligible children use their place?

City of York Council is committed to improving outcomes for all children by offering to fund eligible 2-year-olds to attend good or outstanding childcare settings.  A provider must have a Good or Outstanding Ofsted judgement to offer 2-year-old Free Early Education places.

How do I find out about childcare settings in my area?

The Information Service can provide you with a list of nurseries, play groups and childminders in an area that suits you, either near home or work. Contact them on 01904 554444 or  to receive a list of eligible providers.

How do I choose which childcare setting is right?

All nurseries, playgroups and childminders will be happy to speak to you and allow you to visit so you can see which is right for you and your child. Find more information about choosing childcare and things to look out for in our childcare pages.

How can the free places be taken?

The free places can be taken flexibly within the following limits:

  • The full 15 hours have to be taken over at least two days per week and a maximum of five days per week
  • A minimum of 2.5 hours can be taken in one day
  • A maximum of 10 hours can be taken in one day.

Can I use more than one childcare provider?

You can take the free places at up to two providers. The basic offer is three hours over five days a week, or five hours over three days a week, but many providers will allow you to take the provision flexibly, in a pattern that meets your needs.

For example, your child could have nine hours at a nursery and six hours with a childminder over the course of 3 days or more.
