A virtual, online conference took place between Monday 21 and Friday 25 June, to mark Safeguarding Week 2021.
Partners from Safeguarding Adults Boards, Children’s Safeguarding Partnerships, Community Safety Partnerships across North Yorkshire, the City of York and East Riding came together and developed an extensive programme of learning events, seminars and interactive sessions which all underpin this year’s theme – ‘Safeguarding is everybody’s business’.
The conference boasted a packed programme of sessions for anyone wanting to learn more about safeguarding or develop their skills and knowledge.
Public-facing sessions raised awareness of key issues and provide insight into how every member of the public can play a role in safeguarding themselves, their families and the wider community – reinforcing the key message of the week that ‘Safeguarding is everybody’s business’.
Safeguarding Week was opened with a short message from Lisa Winward, Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police, and Michelle Carrington, Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group and Interim Director of Nursing for Humber, Coast and Vale ICS, closed with a message at the end of the final day.
Throughout the Week, messages were recorded by our Safeguarding Week partners 'VIPS' and they can all be found below:
Richard Webb, Director of Health and Adult Services, North Yorkshire County Council.
Prof Sue Proctor, Chair of the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Adults Board
Tim Madgwick, Chair York Adult Safeguarding Board and Mental Health Partnership.

This animation was created by York Youth Council to promote the work of York Youth Council and encourage young people to get involved. It is an animated video with digital avatars voiced by real members of the York Youth Council.
Show Me That I Matter and I Still Matter were asked if they would be willing to create a resource that shared their experiences and ideas of how health services for Children in Care could be improved.
The resource would be used for sharing with GP’S initially.
To create the short clip members of the groups were asked about their experiences of health services. Whilst there were some real positive examples such as one young person commenting upon his time in hospital “I felt safe and cared for in a time I needed most” young people were also able to identify tips to improve their experience.
A number of young people were consulted initially with further young people involved in ensuring the message was presented in a way that they were happy with and represented their views.
Staying Safe Online - Young Persons Social Media Guide
Young people across York have created a Social Media Guide to provide their peers with information and advice about using social media safely. In partnership with City of York Council, child and adolescent development psychology experts at York St John University ran workshops with young people (aged between 11-18 years) to understand how young people stay safe on social media. Following these workshops, a number of resources have been developed to share with young people around staying safe on social media, and are all available to download on our Young Persons Social Media Guide webpage
There is also a pack for schools or any other professional working with young people with all the material they need in order to deliver their own social media safety workshop in their own setting and these can be found on our Social Media Guide for Profes
