Easter Break Activities

There are lots of activities and events happening in York this Easter, suitable for families to do together and children and young people of all ages. Some are absolutely FREE!

FREE Holiday Activities and Food

FREE Holidays Activities and Food provide free activities and a meal to children and young people, who are eligible for Free School Meals in York and are aged 4 - 16 years old.

 Easter Crafting - Easter Egg Wreath

Feeling creative this Easter and looking for things to do at home?  Try this Easter egg wreath. We'd love to see how yours turns out, so why not post on our Facebook page, or drop us an email at fis@york.gov.uk to show us what you have created this Easter?

      Step by step easter egg wreath

Step by step guide

  • *Cut a circle and egg shaped template out of cardboard
    *Use the egg shaped template to trace around and then cut 8 pieces of craft paper.
    *Glue the 8 craft paper eggs onto the cardboard as shown.
    *Use the egg shaped template to trace around and cut 8 pieces of decorative paper or card or decorate your own paper eggs.
    *Glue the 8 decorative paper eggs to partially overlay the craft paper eggs as shown in the picture above.
    *Tape a piece of string to the back for hanging.
    *Hang your beautiful creation with pride.

Educational Psychology Helpline - Returns this summer term

A confidential telephone support service, staffed by Educational Psychologists, to talk through questions or concerns about children and young people’s wellbeing or learning.

Open to all parents/carers of children with additional needs or SEND living in the City of York, (who have not had recent EP involvement), and any practitioners working with children who live in/attend an educational setting in York.

Calls of up to 30 minutes available during term time only. Wednesday morning 09:30am - 11:30am. 

Starting Wed 04 May - Wed 20 July.

To book a slot email EPsupportline@york.gov.uk with your name and a contact telephone number.

On the following Tuesday, we will e-mail you with a time slot for your consultation. Booking for each week will close on Mondays at 5pm. Spaces are allocated on a first come, first served basis. This is a one off consultation provided by City of York Educational Psychologists on a rota basis

Please note: the helpline offers short slots to talk with a psychologist about particular concerns; unfortunately, within the time available, we cannot advise on complex situations where different agencies need to work together to support a child or young person.

Positive Futures Parenting Support 

Do you want to improve your relationship with your children and young people? Parenting children can be tough, but it can also be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. Bright Sparks FREE 8 week course aimed at parents/carers of children between the ages of 5 and 11 in York, helps you understand how to build strong and stable relationships with your children, whatever your age. 

Meet other parents and carers, and share ideas and experiences in an inclusive and non-judgemental environment. Get support to put an action plan together to include any changes that you would like to make. The course is based on the latest evidence and research; and learners will receive an easy to use handbook, plus lots of help and support from our friendly, experienced tutors. Morning or evening courses available.

Reduce your Childcare Costs

 Whether you have baby or teen visit www.childcarechoices.gov.uk for information on the different ways you can save on your childcare costs.

Childcare includes Ofsted registered providers: childminders, pre school playgroups, nurseries, nannies, breakfast, holiday and after school clubs. If you need a list of childcare in the area you are looking contact York FIS 01904 554444 / fis@york.gov.uk / www.yor-ok.org.uk/childcare

A quick summary:

Tax Free Childcare

0 - 11 year olds (or 16 if disabled) get up to £2000 per child

15 hours funded childcare

Some 2 year olds receive up to 15 hours funded childcare if you receive certain benefits or a low income or your child has a disability or additional need or your child is adopted. For full information about eligibility and to apply visit www.yor-ok.org.uk/2yearfunding   

All 3 and 4 year olds receive up to 15 hours funded childcare. Just contact your local childcare provider and let them know you wish you use the funded hours. There is no application form for 3 and 4 year olds. 

30 hours funded childcare 

Some 3 and 4 year olds can receive up to 30 hours funded childcare, if their parents earn at least £152 per week (equivalent to 16 hours at the national minimum wage). Families whose parents are on maternity/paternity/adoption leave or unable to work because of disability or caring responsibilities could still be eligible.

Tax Credits for childcare 

0-15 year olds (or 16 if disabled) can get up to 70% of childcare costs

Universal Credit for Childcare

0 - 16 year olds up to 85% of eligible childcare costs

York Energy Advice – Warmer homes for less

We offer free support on energy issues to Families in York on a low income, aged 65 or over, or experiencing a long term physical or mental health condition or disability.

Get in touch with our friendly team for:

  • Advice on managing energy bills
  • Tips on reducing energy use to save money on bills
  • Installation of energy-saving measures
  • Info on other services in York e.g. debt advice, insulation grants and more

New Service Spotlight

Many new services and activities have been added to our Service Directory over the last few weeks since our last newsletter.

Humber, Coast And Vale SEND Designated Keyworker Service - For children and young people with a learning disability, autism, or both, with the most complex needs will have a designated Keyworker. 

Mumblerhood Expecting Parents – held once a month on a Monday evening we will be hosting a social get together at Roko Health Club for expectant parents looking to meet other new parents with similar due dates. Free to come along.

The Henry Programme at The Avenues Children Centre – This is an 8 week programme focusing on health, exercise, nutrition for the really young (under 5s). Held at different venues at our Children’s Centres and is free.

The Henry programme at Hob Moor Children's Centre – This is an 8 week programme focusing on health, exercise, nutrition for the really young (under 5s). Held at different venues at our Children’s Centres and is free.

Under 8s Rugby at Heworth – for children aged in year 3 ready for a new challenge and want to have fun, learn new skills and make new friends

York Stage School – Yorkie Puds Baby and Yorkie Puds Toddler explore the world of music, sensory play, rhythm and movement to help develop important skills (for all ages babies – adults).

Join a range of services who support children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities in workshops and Q&A sessions throughout 2022. You can hear from services such as:

Access4All

Access4All, the young people’s voice group, has held their first two meetings of the year. The group is made up of six  incredible young people from Millthorpe School who are supporting the council and health providers to improve services for children and young people with SEND in York. We’ll share more details of their work as soon as possible or you can take a look at the Access4All page on the Local Offer Website

 

Special Edition SEND Newsletter

Look out for our special edition SEND Newsletter, coming to you soon.

The newsletter will provide an update on all the work that has been taking place at City of York Council and Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group to improve services for young people with SEND, since the service inspection in 2019.

The special edition newsletter will be shared via your child’s school, .

Get Involved in shaping provision

Getting the views of children, young people and families we’re working with is critical to help us improve SEND provision now and in the future. Thanks to all the families who were involved in the second phase of our SEND Inclusion Review, supported our proposed plans whilst providing us with further ideas.

Specialist Teaching Team Virtual Parent Group: Autism Topic Talks

The specialist teaching team will be holding a series of Topic Discussions led by the Specialist Teaching Team on zoom, for families with children with autism:

  • Transitions within and between settings Wednesday 4 May 2022 (10-11am)
  • Masking Wednesday 18 May (10-11am)
  • Managing Meltdowns Wednesday 8 June (10-11am)
  • Relationships with parents/carers, siblings and peers Wednesday 22 June (10-11am)
  • Help for the holidays Wednesday 6 July (10-11am)

Get Involved this Easter

Goalball Junior Day

York, 12 April at 10am

The event is open to young people aged 8-16 of any sight level, and to new or existing players.

Players will have the opportunity to develop their on-court skills through fun games and friendly matches, delivered to suit all abilities. Players will also have time to socialise through structured fun activities

IMPs Holiday Clubs

Hop Into Spring – Thursday 14 April 10am at New Earswick Folk Hall (Ages 8+)

Join Ellen and Ben for this multi-sensory movement, sound and visual holiday club themed around the animals of spring. Come along to move like a bunny, or use your imaginations to make a bird soundscape. There’ll be lots of multi-sensory props, some springtime visuals and musical instruments to explore. 

Spring Fever – Wednesday 20 April 1:30pm at New Earswick Folk Hall (Ages 8+)

Come and sing your way through all elements of spring with Anna and Hannah. We'll be exploring the animals, the weather and nature of spring through sensory song. We’ll use our hands to sign the words, and sensory props which brings the songs to life.
