SleepSmart Research

SleepSmart Logo   Do you know a child who would be interested in taking part in
sleep research? SleepSmart is an exciting new research project
looking at the role that sleep plays in memory and learning in
children. It is looking for children aged 8 - 12 years to take part
   in its study.

If you would like to find out more, email sleepsmart@york.ac.uk or call Natasha Thompson on 01904 324359.

Aspire to More Event

Aspire to MoreShow Me That I Matter [SMTIM], a group of looked after young people who advocate for issues affecting all children in care in York, launched the Aspire to More project at a celebratory showcase event this month.

It provided an opportunity for professionals, foster carers and young people to learn about the importance of care leaver role models and raising the aspirations of care experienced young people in the city.

Featuring video messages from writers Jenny Molly and Paolo Hewitt, as well as Children’s Commissioner, Anne Longfield, the event also included poetry, music and presentations from SMTIM.

Check out the blog here and if you know someone who is a care leaver who would like to share their story and become a role model, please get in touch here

SMTIM's King John Room Makeover

King John Room Artwork   With a brief to create a more uplifting atmosphere in the
King John Room at West Offices, Show Me That I
[SMTIM], York’s Children in Care Council has
recently redeveloped the room where SMTIM, young
people, families and social workers regularly meet.

Some of the Team

Central to the project, and now proudly displayed, is a beautiful piece of artwork produced by the SMTIM team and York graffiti artist, Miss Hazard, featuring iconic images of the city, as well as inspirational quotes.

The makeover has been enthusiastically received – well done to everyone involved!

Launch of My Family, Our Needs Website

A new website – My Family, Our Needs – has launched and offers information for practitioners, families and carers supporting children and young adults with additional needs, from birth to 25.

It features practical articles on life with a child with additional needs, alongside lifestyle content, blogs, policy and news.

With the site still in development, the Production Team would welcome your feedback here.

National Safeguarding Week

National Safeguarding Week is taking place between 17 - 21 October with the theme of domestic abuse.

Child   As part of this, the City of York Safeguarding Children
and Adults Boards will have a stand in the foyer of West
Offices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday [from
11.00 to 14.00] of that week
. This will have information
about domestic abuse and the services available across
the city. The stand will be staffed by representatives from both boards including partners from health, education and NYP. A representative from IDAS and Kyra will also be with us each day to promote their services.
