Course outline

Travel & Tourism is a dynamic, fun and rewarding industry with people at its heart. It is made up of a number of industries that fall into two main sectors: travel and tourism, and passenger transport. The Diploma in Travel & Tourism gives you a good insight into the industry. Communication, teamwork, customer service and people skills are essential qualities. This is a dynamic sector where style and image play a big part. You'll develop the relevant skills, knowledge and analytical abilities in context to make learning more interesting and motivating.

What will I study?

This is made up of units that are sector related. It focuses on developing knowledge and skills relevant to the sectors and applying these to work-based situations. At higher level, students will complete 9 units.

You will also study common course elements of additional/specialist learning, generic learning, personal learning and thinking skills, a project, and work experience.

How and where is the course delivered?

The course will be delivered at Canon Lee School, through York common timetable arrangements. In Year 10, Principal Learning will take place on a Thursday and in Year 11 on a Tuesday.

How is the course assessed?

Principal learning will be assessed by:

  1. Internal assessment – supervised and completed under controlled conditions – 6 units
  2. External assessment – set and marked by the awarding body – 1 unit

What next?

The diploma doesn't necessarily mean you have to choose a career in this sector. Because a diploma teaches a mix of subjects, it will give you the skills that will be welcomed by colleges and employers, no matter what you do.

Job Opportunities

This could lead on to a job with training or an apprenticeship as a retail travel consultant, resort representative, call centre team member, business travel assistant or airport information assistant.
