Top tips!

Parenting Handbooks Children don't come with a handbook! The Family Information Service have asked parents and carers for their 'top tips' to pass onto others. Every family is unique so these tips won't work for every different type of family but you may find something that you can use.
Family Picnic

"Get outside to play, go to the park and take a blanket and a ball. If the weather is good have a picnic!"

Find out where parks and opens spaces are through the service directory (opens in a new window).

Children on play equipment

"Encourage your children to join groups/try new activities. There is only one way to find out if they like something – try it. You might not enjoy it, but your child could love it!"

Ask at your child's school what groups or activities they run. In the holidays make sure to look at School's Out to find out what is happening.

Getting ready for school

"Listen to your child without interrupting because you think you know what they are going to say."

The Talking Point website has great information about listening to your child (opens in a new window).

Parents thinking

"Remember it may seem like all other parents are coping brilliantly and you’re not but they may be struggling too."

All parents will experience difficulties or challenges its just parents will show it in different ways. Look at what parenting groups and services are available to you.
