Take Over Day 2009

On Friday 6th November 2009 children and young people 'tookover' York!

11 MILLION TAKEOVER DAY gives children and young people a chance to get involved in decision making, have their say and show adults what they can do.

This happens through children and young people going into places like schools, youth clubs, organisations, companies, shops and other places to ‘takeover’ and show adults what they can do! All children and young people can take part, and you can choose how you do it. Just make sure an adult knows what you’re up to.

Last year, 11 MILLION TAKEOVER DAY was a huge success across the country. Over 700 organisations took part, and least 17,000 children and young people had their say through 11 MILLION TAKEOVER DAY!

Last year in YORK young people were involved in designing a poster campaign to promote positive images of young people, children from primary schools worked with the police to audit their local environment, young people worked with trading standards to test purchase cigarettes, children from a primary school were involved in working with elected members.

The national take over day website has information about events that took place across the country.

Meeting the Chief Executive

The Deputy Member of the Youth Parliament for York, met with Chief executive of City of York Council, Kersten England. Afterward Joe said ‘My meeting managed to bring some of the major concerns of the youth council to the Chief executive, some of which the Chief Executive has promised to help us with’.

Kersten England said in her blog:

‘I had a very interesting and enjoyable meeting on Friday with Joe Armer who is a York Member of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament. He came to see me on ‘Takeover Day’, a day when young people across the country get the opportunity to shadow and undertake roles of people in positions of authority. He came to talk to me about the work of a chief executive and also about how we could work together to create more opportunities for young people to get involved in decisions about services affecting them.

‘This is not just an agenda for Pete Dwyer and his colleagues in LCCS – it affects all of us and the way we deliver services. We talked about a number of ways in which we might tackle this agenda – such as encouraging more young people to attend ward committees, involving young people in equality impact assessments, creating more shadowing opportunities and using the internet to sponsor debates on issues by young people. If you would like to find out more about or help support the work of Joe and his colleagues in the Youth Council contact Sarah Nicholson on 552355.’
