Ocay (Older Citizens Advocacy York)

York

Description

OCAY is a charity based in York that provides advocacy support for York residents over the age of 50. OCAY was formed in 2001 following a Better Government for Older People pilot programme in York that identified the need for advocacy specifically for older people. This support is aimed at helping people to develop the confidence to speak up for themselves and voice concerns about issues affecting them. We provide generic advocacy ranging from support with finances and benefits, through to family disputes and disability issues. Many of the older people supported by OCAY have underlying issues such as dementia, ill health, disability and frailty. OCAY supports people to make decisions for themselves, rather than providing advice.
We also signpost service users to other organisations in York, if their needs can be better met by another service. Our advocates can support them to access and use these other services if required.

OCAY’s broad aims are:
1. To provide a free and independent advocacy service, so that older people achieve empowerment, self determination and equality.
2. To ensure that older people aged 50+ have a voice in any issues that concern them and that their voice is heard appropriately with the support of an independent advocate.
3. To develop older people's self confidence and skills, to help them achieve their goals and to feel that they can and do make a contribution in society.
4. To help relieve poverty by supporting older people aged 50+ to claim benefits to which they are entitled.
5. To reduce social isolation among older York residents and to enable them to become socially included through our advocacy.
6. To promote the general well being of older people in York
7. To increase the number and skills base of volunteers (including older people) in York.
