St Nicks Local Nature Reserve

York

Description

This 24-acre Green Flag award-winning site was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 2004. In the Middle Ages, this land was open fields, grazed by the cattle belonging to the monks from St Nicholas Hospital. Since then it has been a brick works, the city rubbish dump and an unofficial wild site. Now reclaimed for both nature and people, and home to a wide range of species including kingfisher and water vole. Visitors are welcome to collect maps and leaflets, and use facilities at the Environment Centre. Please see the website for the Centre opening times and directions.

St Nicks encourage all visitors to come on foot, by bicycle (national route 66) or bus whenever possible. Buses stop on Melrosegate or Lawrence Street, around a 5-10 minute walk away. There is a small car park in front of the Environment Centre if it is needed. The car entrance is from Melrosegate via Rawdon or Harrington Avenue. Pedestrians and cyclists only can also use the Bull Lane entrance, off Lawrence Street.

Managed by St Nicks - centre for nature and green living (charity registered as Friends of St Nicholas Fields, no. 1153739).
