In 1939 author BB (Denys Watkins-Pitchford) wrote his first novel, Wild Lone, about a fox called Rufus who lives out his days deep in the Northamptonshire countryside. Although the book never achieved great fame, it is considered by many to be an unsung masterpiece on a par with the likes of Tarka the Otter. In The Smiling Fox, new generation storyteller Jo Blake pays homage to Wild Lone and the landscape BB so lovingly portrayed. The piece weaves together folktales, autobiography, passages from the novel and snippets of BB’s life to explore the human connection to place through the wild eye of the fox.

Jo Blake has been telling stories professionally since 2005, having trained at Emerson College, The University of Winchester, Laban and with leading storytellers. She has performed across the country, in schools, storytelling clubs and at festivals, in libraries, museums and other venues. The stories Jo tells come from the deep well of cultural heritage, including folk tales, fairytales, myths and legends, both local and from across the world.
