Safeguarding children during school transfers

These procedures aim to help schools to safeguard children and ensure they are complying with current legislation and good practice.

Please refer to them:

  • when children are joining/leaving your school;

  • to help identify children who are missing education;

Ensuring the welfare of children is a key role for both Schools and the Local Authority. As a result, legislation has been introduced to ensure that schools and LAs track children and young people. This new guidance incorporates all the recent changes.

As one of the key universal services that children access on a regular basis, it has been acknowledged that education has an important role in safeguarding children, as part of the Every Child Matters agenda.

This local guidance deals with what happens when children move between schools. A number of LA sections have worked together (e.g. Education Welfare, Access and MIS) to develop one set of guidance that schools can use, to help ensure that no child is missing from education.

As good practice and legislation in this area tends to change frequently, we have decided to publish this guidance through the YorOK website rather than producing a printed document. We will ensure the information on the website is kept up to date. We would encourage schools to access the guidance directly through the website rather than printing the documents or downloading your own copy.
