Options 14+
In Years 10 and 11 there is a core group of subjects that most of you will take: English, Maths and Science (usually at GCSE).
What else you do will depend on:
- your interests
- ability
- what's available.
Here are the options that your school/college may offer...
Interview
We ask Annie from York High School to tell us what she plans to do at the end of Year 9 and why.
What would you like to do at the end of Year 9?
"I want to have made the correct decision about my GCSE. I want to take PE, Spanish, Geography and Art along with English, Maths, Science, RE and IT."
Why do you think this would be a good choice?
"I think these are a good choice as I want to become a physiotherapist and travel the world so I will need a range of skills and qualifications."
What are you good at?
"I am fairly good at sport and teamwork. Although I’m not outstanding at any sport I have captained many teams and can play most sports."
Who have you talked to about it?
"I haven’t really talked about it much but my family and coaches give me support whenever I need it (and even when I don’t)."
Where do you go for advice?
"My friends and team-mates are always there to give me advice, whether it’s about career choices, undertaking a new challenge or just reassuring me when I’m unsure."
Hints and tips
Talk to your teachers and Personal Adviser about which options are right for you. They're there to help you!
Read your school's 'Options' booklet carefully. Talk about it at home.
Don't choose a subject because you like your current teacher – you may not have the same teacher in Year 10.
Choose subjects you will enjoy – not just because your friends plan to take them.
Your school will have an information/options evening – its a good chance to find out more.
Special needs
If you think you may need extra help, or additional support, there is information and advice on special needs.
Work experience
Work experience will help you to understand what it might be like to work in a particular job.
