Course outline
The Hospitality Diploma is an exciting new qualification that allows learners to explore the world of Hospitality. This introductory level 1 qualification will provide learners with realistic 'hands on' approach and activities to allow them to experience the diverse nature of the sector and identify possible job opportunities and potential career routes. The Diploma introduces learners to the hospitality industry and its importance to the UK economy and everyday lives. This is achieved by exploring the Hospitality Industry, and the fundamentals of good customer service and people in the Hospitality sectors well as various Hospitality operations.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. Learners should have a real interest in the Hospitality industry, good people skills and a basic understanding of customer service.
What will I study?
Principal Learning – the compulsory aspects
This is made up of units that are sector related and includes a minimum of 50% applied learning. Principal learning develops knowledge, understanding and skills in the following topics:
- Introducing the hospitality industry
- Importance of the Hospitality Industry to the UK
- Introducing customer service
- Developing skills to work in the hospitality industry
- Developing ideas for menus
- Preparing and serving food and beverages
How and where is the course delivered?
The course will be delivered at Burnholme Community College, through York common timetable arrangements. In Year 10, Principal Learning will take place on a Thursday and in Year 11 on a Tuesday.
How is the course assessed?
Principal learning will be assessed by:
- Internal assessments – supervised and completed under controlled conditions – 5 units
- External assessment – set and marked by the awarding body – 1 unit
What next?
Learners could go to study Level 2 Diploma in Hospitality, NVQ level 2 in a range of Hospitality awards and apprenticeships.
Job Opportunities
Learners will acquire skills and knowledge that would be recognized by employers. Job opportunities could include Kitchen or Restaurant Assistant, Assistant Housekeeper or Assistant Receptionist.
