Course outline

The Hospitality Advanced Diploma introduces a range of management and business concepts, knowledge and skills in a hospitality context, with further access to technical skills through specialist learning. It centres on the learner's continuing development and will provide a clear platform for learners to explore opportunities within the sector, leading to a professional entry level qualification (NVQ Level 3) or higher education. It will:

  • Provide learners with an academically rigorous programme of study
  • Facilitate progression into higher education or in preparation for employment at technical level
  • Allow learners to develop a range of transferable employability skills and identify possible job opportunities and potential career routes
  • Provide opportunities to promote advancement of individuals in their personal learning and thinking skills to become independent, confident and effective people committed to their own development
  • Build on the learners' previous studies to extend the learners interest and develop understanding of the hospitality sector as a whole.

Studying the Hospitality Diploma at Advanced level will learn how to analyse the strengths of a business in hospitality and how the industry thrives on fresh ideas. You will also learn about team work and management in the industry.

What will I study?

Principal Learning – the compulsory aspects

This is made up of units that are sector related and includes a minimum of 50% applied learning. Principal learning develops knowledge, understanding and skills in the following topics:

  • Investigating the UK hospitality industry
  • Law and procedures in the hospitality industry
  • Customer service standards in the hospitality industry
  • Building and developing effective hospitality teams
  • Managing people in the hospitality industry
  • Finance and budgetary control in the hospitality industry
  • Sales and marketing in the hospitality industry
  • Running a hospitality business
  • Managing a food operation in hospitality
  • Hospitality services

You will also study common course elements of additional/specialist learning, generic learning, personal learning and thinking skills, a project, and work experience.

The course will be available at York College.

How is the course assessed?

Principal learning will be assessed by:

  1. Internal assessments – supervised and completed under controlled conditions – 8 units
  2. External assessment – set and marked by the awarding body – 2 unit

What next?

Students could progress to higher education at Foundation Degree level or Higher Degree level with many universities.

Job Opportunities

Learners will acquire skills and knowledge that would be recognised by employers. Job opportunities could include trainee manager, supervisor, sales and marketing, and receptionist.
