Family Information Direct

Family Information Direct is an extensive online directory offering parents and those working with them the ability to search for information about childcare and families services in both their local community, in other areas and nationally.

Each local authority will maintain two key areas of information that are uploaded to the national Family Information Direct system. The two key areas are:

  • Enhanced Childcare Directory – Information about Ofsted registered and unregistered childcare.
  • Family Service Directory – Any service that could be of interest to families with children or young people aged 0-19 years old (25 with additional needs).

The value of Family Information Direct depends on people being able to access it, to find information that helps them. This access will not be through a single “Family Information Direct website”, but through numerous channels, both local and national.

Web toolkits have also been produced that mean that other organisations can add the Family Information Direct to their existing website for free (e.g. a school or community group).

Currently the directory can be accessed through the YorOK website and Direct.gov. Both of these websites have been built using the "web templates" however please note that the directory is at a very early stage and there a number of teething problems that need to be resolved.

York Family Information Service (York FIS) is supplying information for what is available for York. If you have any questions about the directory or would like to add your service to the directory please contact YorkFIS on 01904 554444.

This work, and partnerships to help provide access to Family Information Direct will contribute to local authorities overall communication strategy to provide information for all. The guidance for providing information advice and assistance in Section 12 of the Childcare Act (2006) states:

‘It is recommended that LAs establish and maintain communication strategies to ensure a joined-up approach to provision of information for both parents and children. [Chapter 3 – 8.3 to 8.4]’

The Family Service Directory is expected to contain several different key areas of information. The list below shows these key service areas of what is expected. However the list is not exhaustive and what is included in the directory should reflect the needs of local families.
