Course outline

The Environmental and Land Based Industries are worth about £8.9billion per year and employ 720,000 people in a huge range of jobs which require a vast array of skills. Many of these people are running their own businesses and there is huge scope for budding entrepreneurs to grow in the industry.

The Advanced diploma in Environmental and Land-based Studies has been designed to give a broad understanding of this large industry, which includes 17 different sectors, and allow you to meet people working across these sectors and complete work experience in a work environment of interest to you. It also provides relevant preparation for a career, apprenticeship or further study at University or College. The diploma covers many topics but has been split into 3 themes:

  • Theme A: The productive and working environments
  • Theme B: Plants and Animals
  • Theme C: Developing the sustainable environment.

What's it worth?

The Advanced Diploma will be equivalent to 3½ A levels (grades A*–E)

Year 12/13

Entry Requirements

A keen interest in the land-based industries is essential this could include agriculture, sustainability, conservation, animal care, forestry or horticulture.

What is studied?

The Advanced diploma in Environmental and Land-based studies has a very wide ranging content aimed at developing your understanding of the industry as a whole.

Principal Learning

This is made up of units that are sector related. It focuses on developing knowledge and skills relevant to the sectors and applying these to work-based situations. At Advanced level, students will complete 9 units:

  • The ecology of the natural environment and the importance of biodiversity
  • Management of natural resources and successful production systems
  • Business management and careers in the Environmental and Land-based sector
  • Plants and animals: applied science
  • Plants, animals and humans: how they relate
  • Plants and animals: safe working practices and relevant legislation
  • Sustainable management and development of resources
  • Global impacts and the Environmental and Land-based sector
  • Research methodology, evaluation and environmental analysis

You will also study common course elements of additional/specialist learning, generic learning, personal learning and thinking skills, a project, and work experience.

The course will be taught over 2 years.

The course will be delivered through York Common timetable arrangements at Askham Bryan College

How is the course assessed?

Principle Learning will be assessed by internal and external methods.

  1. Internal Assessment – Supervised and completed under controlled conditions – 7 units
  2. External Assessment – Set and marked by the awarding body – 2 units

What next?

The course is designed to be interesting and relevant to the current environmental and land-based industries and to open up a good range of educational, training and career opportunities. The Advanced Diploma will allow progression into Higher Education or Employment or onto an Advanced Apprenticeship.
