Take Over Week 2011
Takeover Day offers children and young people across the country the chance to work with adults and get involved in decision-making in all kinds of organisations. And here in York, to make sure you get the best opportunities, we’re planning Takeover Week, Monday 7th to Friday 11th November 2011.
This year, opportunities include buying books for the libraries, taking over roles within the council and York Youth Council will be joining some of the Cabinet Members for a meeting.
Tang Hall Primary School pupils are taking over the school for the week with opportunities including reception duties, site manager duties, gardening and helping out with the Toybus. One class is meeting with Cllr Ruth Potter to help decide how the budget for Heworth Ward should be spent and another has the opportunity to interview a reporter from the York Press.
In previous years young people have taken over as headteacher, worked with police to carry out environmental audits and young reporters have covered the day. A primary school also took over as Lord Mayor for the morning. It was very successful with the children gaining a great insight into the role of the Lord Mayor.

If you’re not taking part in Takeover Week, you might want to get involved in this opportunity from the BBC.
The BBC are doing a national project called "Britain in a Day" where they want individuals and especially community groups around the country to film what they are doing on 12th November and upload the footage onto You Tube. Ridley Scott (Producer of Gladiator) will then choose some of the footage and produce a film which will be shown on the BBC as part of the Olympics.
If you work in a school or are interested in providing an opportunity for Takeover Day, please get in touch with Helen Jones on 01904 554699 or email helen.jones@york.gov.uk for more information.
