Preparing for an interview
- Find out where the venue is beforehand, how to get there and how long it will take you. If necessary visit the venue prior to the interview date and arrive early for your interview
- Dress smartly. Remember, first impressions count and if possible prepare your interview outfit the day before
- Take a copy of your CV and evidence of your qualifications with you
- Don't smoke before the interview and don't chew gum
- Turn your mobile phone off
- Prepare answers for the main questions – for example, why do you want the job, what work experience do you have, what do you know about the role you are applying for and be prepared to answer questions relating to your CV.
During the interview
To help the employer to find out about your skills, knowledge and/or aptitude for a certain type of job, you may be asked to complete a range of tests. These could include keyboard assessment, assisting on the shop floor to assess how you interact with customers or take part in a group activity or discussion.
The employer will ask a set of questions relating to the job you have applied for. Try not to answer with a simple 'yes' or 'no'. The employer is checking for the skills you have, how you work within a team and your suitability for the role. A list of interview questions and possible answers can be found on Next Step.
During the interview remain calm and look confident. If necessary take a few deep breaths. At the end of the interview you will be given the opportunity to ask any questions that are appropriate. Thank the employer for their time and ask how they will inform you of the results of the interview.
