International Baccalaureate Diploma (Level 3)

International Baccalaureate

What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD)?

The IBD is an internationally recognised qualification which allows you to study a broader range of subjects during Years 12 and 13 than is usually possible on A Level programmes. It leads to a single qualification rather than separate qualifications for individual subjects. An IBD programme involves study of six subjects drawn from the arts, science, maths, languages and humanities. There is also a compulsory core:

  • Theory of Knowledge
  • Creativity, Action and Service
  • Extended Essay

Which subjects are available?

The six subjects studied must come from fixed groups. Generally you choose to study three at a "higher" level and three at a "standard" level. In York the IBD is available at Huntington School.

How is the IBD assessed?

Most of the assessment is through externally marked exams. However, in nearly all subjects some of the assessment is carried out by your teachers marking individual pieces of coursework. This is a two year course with exams in November and May.

Where can the IBD lead?

Most students taking the IBD go onto higher education and it is recognised by universities around the world. However, you may need to have studied certain subjects at the "higher" level for specific degree courses. You can also go into employment or higher level training.

Where can I find out more?
