Higher Education
What is higher education?
Higher Education (HE) means courses at universities/colleges that lead to a Degree (eg BA, BEd, BSc), Higher National Diploma (HND), Diploma in Education (DipHE), or Foundation Degree.
Is it for you?
HE qualifications will open a lot of doors! Employers value the skills and knowledge you will gain.
A degree is essential for some professions, eg medicine and teaching.
Higher education may be one of the most enjoyable times of your life.
There is a wide range of academic and vocational options to choose from, eg history, complementary medicine, sports, dance, drama and music.
How to apply
You will apply for most HE courses through UCAS. This is the key website for help and information. It provides:
- a central application system
- a detailed guide to the application process
- a short questionnaire (the Stamford Test) to help you match your interests and abilities to possible HE subjects.
For a limited number of courses, eg some foundation degrees, you will apply directly to the college or university.
What qualifications can you do?
Degree
The most popular option!
- Most degrees take three years, full-time to complete.
- Some take longer than three years, eg languages, medicine, architecture, Scottish degrees.
- Sandwich Degrees include a work placement and generally take four years to complete.
- Entrance requirements will vary, but you usually need a minimum of two A levels, or equivalent. Certain subjects/grades may be required. Always check the individual course requirements.
Foundation degree
Foundation Degrees are offered in vocational subjects and combine academic study with workplace learning.
- They take two years, full-time to complete, but are also widely available on a part-time basis.
- It is possible to progress to a degree with further study.
- Entry requirements vary. You should check with the individual university/college or at UCAS.
HND
Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) are vocational qualifications, which focus on a specific career area, eg business, construction.
- They take two years, full-time to complete. This may be extended to three years if the course includes a work placement (often known as a 'sandwich year').
- An HND qualification may enable you to transfer onto year 2/3 of a degree.
- Entry requirements are usually one A level or equivalent. Check with the individual university or college.
DipHE
A Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE) is sometimes combined with a professional, or vocational qualification.
- They take two years to complete.
- Entry requirements are similar to degree courses.
- A DipHE can be converted to a degree with further study.
