What is Foundation Learning?

Foundation Learning provides a personalised, tailored programme of qualifications to help young people to build up credits of achievement at Entry Level or Level 1.

There are no formal entry requirements and the programme is designed to support you to progress at your own pace, build confidence and progress towards your next goal, whether that’s further education, an apprenticeship, supported employment or independent living. It is often called a guided choice, and schools will discuss places on foundation learning programmes with students and their parents.

What might I study?

Subject and vocational learning might be from your school's own programme or elsewhere. Examples are GCSEs in subjects you are good at and vocational subjects taught at school or in the specialist facilities at the Danesgate Skills Centre, which include Hairdressing, Construction, Catering and Horticulture.

Personal and Social Development could include volunteering, work experience and studying for qualifications such as ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (COPE), Edexcel Workskills or City & Guilds Skills for Working Life.

ASDAN: you complete 'personal challenges' and can gain a range of awards at Bronze, Silver and Gold. You can usually combine this with core GCSEs. See ASDAN for more information.

Developing functional skills means that everyone on Foundation Learning programmes has the chance to acquire the skills in numeracy, literacy and IT which they will need in further study, employment and everyday life.

Where can I find out more?

Your school will give you full details about their foundation learning programme, so ask your teachers for more information or get in touch with your school’s careers advisor.
