Substance Misuse

Substance misuse is an issue for young people in the city whether it be their own misuse, risky behaviour caused by using drugs or alcohol or young people being affected by other people’s substance misuse.

The Substance Misuse Strategy sits within the City of York Risk and Resilience Strategy, a key element in the strategy is to provide you with training and information to enable you to support young people with substance misuse issues.

Drug misuse amongst young people is different from adults. Few young people use heroin or crack and very few are addicted. The most common illicit drug for which young people seek support is cannabis. The National Treatment Agency provides information and statistics about young peoples substance misuse. Drug education and prevention work is delivered through schools and nationally through FRANK. Visit the FRANK website for more information. Drugs guidance for schools is available on the Department for Education Website.

The Young People's Specialist Substance Misuse Service Atlas Lifeline provides targetted substance misuse interventions and specialist treatment to young people up to 18 years who live in the City of York or are under the care of the Local Aurthority. The service is available to young people who are affected by their own or significant other's substance misuse. Referrals are accepted directly from young people, their families and other professionals via face to face meetings; telephone; email or post. Consent to treatment is required in order to receive a service.

The service also offers support to parents and carers of young people who have been identified as having a substance misuse issue.

You can contact the Atlas Lifeline team on 01904 464680 or by emailing York@lifeline.org.uk

Search the service directory for local and national services that support work with substance misuse.

When you are working with young people around substance misuse issues you need to be aware of other risks they may be taking, for example relationships, sexual health and teenage pregnancy.
