Extended Services
What are Extended Services?
Extended Services work to raise aspirations and close the gap in achievement and attainment for all children and young people, by facilitating good quality out-of-school childcare and enriching learning opportunities in and around the school day.
The core offer:
The core offer of Extended Services, which all schools are expected to provide by 2010, is made up of five elements:
- childcare (in primary and special schools);
- a varied menu of activities including extended learning opportunities, sports activities and music clubs;
- swift and easy access to targeted and specialist services;
- parenting support including family learning; and,
- community access to facilities including adult and family learning, ICT and sports facilities.
You can click on each of the above links to find out information about each aspect of the core offer, and what schools should be doing to provide Extended Services. Schools can also access links to these pages from the Local Authority Portal: http://www.yorkla.org
The Extended Services handbook also has information on:
-

Ofsted and Extended ServicesThe introduction of the new Ofsted inspection framework in September 2009 gives a greater emphasis to Extended Services, and particularly in the area of partnership working. We have pulled together some useful documents which will support you in completing your SEF and preparing for future Ofsted inspections. |

York Council for Voluntary Services have produced a factsheet for schools, detailing the support that is available to local voluntary and community sector providers of Extended Services. You can download the factsheet by clicking on this link: Factsheet for Schools - Voluntary and Community Sector.

Volunteer opportunities – Play partners
As part of our commitment to Play, we are working towards developing and increasing the Play workforce. Over the next year we will be working with local residents and unemployed adults.
How will we do this?
We will be recruiting adults through local advertising and referrals from agencies such as Job Centre.
We aim to provide Playwork experiences in the form of Volunteers opportunities to Adults. We will train the volunteers using our endorsed play modules, support and monitor them and also offer job search support and confidence building. We will take up references and Criminal record bureau (CRB) checks.
The volunteers will be supported by a dedicated Volunteer/training Co-ordinator.
We need your help.
To enable us to do all this we require placements for the volunteers. We envisage that the majority of the placements will be provided from within Playspace’s own Play sessions e.g. Chill Out Zones and playschemes.
We would also like to work with Play partners who would be willing to offer a placement. All placements will be supported by ourselves.
This will provide a future trained workforce which will be available to all the play sector.
