Child Poverty

Child Poverty—Everybody's Business

The City of York shares the national ambition to eradicate child poverty by 2020. This ambition was laid out in the Child Poverty Act and passed into law in March 2010 with full party support, re-enforced by the new government in May 2010.

The city has a new child poverty strategy. The aim of the strategy will be to achieve a fair and inclusive society where every child is given the best start in life and an equal opportunity to fulfil his or her potential.

Defining child poverty

The Child Poverty Bill defines poverty in terms of income and uses a tiered approach of absolute low income, relative low income, material deprivation combined with low income and persistent poverty.

The child poverty indicator used by the Government is that of income below 60 per cent of total equivalised disposable family income before housing costs.

The 2007 Government statistics reveal that approximately 20 per cent of families with children are living below this low-income threshold.

Some areas in York fall into that 20% that is why it is so important that as a city we work together to reduce this number and halp as many families out of poverty as possible.
