CAF, Common Assessment Framework  in York

A common way of gathering information about children / young people and families and deciding what type of support is needed.

What is it?

CAF is a common way of gathering information about children / young people and families in one place and using it to help decide what type of support is needed. People from different organisations will talk to each other, share information and work together. This means that families won’t have to keep repeating themselves and the right support can be identified quickly. The assessment is voluntary and should be undertaken in a sensitive manner.

What Happens?

As a practitioner you will talk with families about:

  • People who live with the child / young person
  • What impact friends and family have
  • What support they already getting
  • What their health needs are
  • The education or training they receive
  • If they have housing, work or money issues they need help with
  • Consent for the assessment and information sharing

You then record the information using the CAF form. A copy is given to the child / young person / family and other practitioners, where necessary. You will notify the Child Index 01904 551900 that you have completed a CAF.

The CAF can then be sent to other agencies to explain what support is needed. Then all involved can meet together with the child / young person and talk about what happens next. This will be at a time and place that is convenient to all. At this meeting the Lead Practitioner will be agreed. They will help things run smoothly and talk to other practitioners.
