What is meant by equality and diversity?

Equality can mean lots of different things. For the council it means…

In delivering services…

  • making services accessible so every body can use them. This might mean changing back office policies or procedures as well as front line work.
  • making services flexible and responsive to the different needs of different people – one size does not fit all, consulting customers and listening to what they are telling us.
  • finding out about who isn’t using services and why.
  • making sure we hear the views of  all sections of the community
  • treating all customers with respect and dignity.

In the workplace…

  • having a workforce that reflects the diversity of the local population.
  • creating a working environment that is accessible and inclusive to all.
  • making work a safe and vibrant place, free from harassment and bullying.
  • giving everyone an equal chance to progress and fulfill his or her potential at work.

In the community…

  • providing services and facilities people need to contribute fully to York’s future.
  • helping to build a York where people from different backgrounds, experiences and opportunities live and work well together
