Top tips!

Parenting Handbooks Children don't come with a handbook! The Family Information Service have asked parents and carers for their 'top tips' to pass onto others. Every family is unique so these tips won't work for every different type of family but you may find something that you can use.
Child playing football

"Encourage your children to join groups/try new activities. There is only one way to find out if they like something – try it."

See the School's Out section to find events coming up in the school holidays. Also see the service directory for clubs and groups for young people to get involved with (opens in a new window).

Feeding the ducks

"Encourage your children to explore. Allow them to go further than the back garden but give them a set time to come home. If they prove they can stick to these timescales then reward them by allowing it again."

Young People Playing

"Allow your children to climb, balance, swing and slide without your assistance. Only help where really necessary, it’s important that they learn their own boundaries."

It's important for your child to take some risks when playing. By taking risks it helps them to set their own boundaries and assess risk for themselves.

Parents thinking

"Remember it may seem like all other parents are coping brilliantly and you’re not but they may be struggling too."

All parents will experience difficulties or challenges its just parents will show it in different ways. Look at what parenting groups and services are available to you.
