Parent Mentoring Service

What is it?

Parent mentoring is an exciting new service offering the opportunity for volunteers to support families with disabled children. We know that volunteers can have a huge impact on families, helping them decide what changes they want to make and how to achieve them.

This service is delivered jointly through CSV, the UK’s leading volunteering and training charity, and the City of York Council.

What will volunteers do?

Volunteers will visit families in their home for up to 4 hours a week for a period of 6 to 9 months. They will support the family to overcome barriers, link in with community services, promote good parenting skills and generally be a helping hand and a listening ear.

Can I be a volunteer?

Yes! If you are over the age of 18 and have either experience of parenting or a good understanding of the issues facing families with a disabled child or young person. You must also be able to commit to the service for at least 6 months from the time you are placed with a family.

What do I get out of it?

Full training and support will be given throughout the role, you’ll be able to use existing skills, learn new ones, meet new people and generally have positive impact on the lives of those struggling within the community. Many people use it as an opportunity to develop their CV and successful volunteers can ask for references.
