Family life and useful services

Parent Mentoring Service

What is the Parent Mentoring Service?

The Parent Mentoring Service aims to support families in York who have a disabled child/young person or child/young person with additional needs. Volunteer mentors are recruited, trained and supervised and will support families to:

  • Improve parenting skills and knowledge,
  • Improve family access to support services,
  • Improve the parents ability to cope,
  • Improve children’s attendance at school and enthusiasm for learning,
  • Support the family to understand their child’s disability or additional needs.

Volunteer mentors will meet with parents either in the home or in a community setting weekly. They will be matched with families for 6 months and will work to achieve parent-led goals.

Please read the referral information prior to making referral. To discuss possible referrals please contact Michelle Porter or 551399.

Volunteer with us

Could you be a Parent Mentoring volunteer?

Yes! If you are over the age of 21 and have a good understanding of the issues facing families with a disabled child or young person. You must also be able to commit to the service for at least 6 months from the time you are placed with a family.

Why volunteer?

You’ll be able to use existing skills, learn and develop new ones, meet new people and have a positive impact on the lives of those struggling within your community.

Parent’s comments:

‘I feel like I’m not alone and that people are there to support me who do care.’

‘I felt like I was a bucket to be filled up with rubbish and now I feel like there is a away out and that has had an impact on the kids’

Volunteer comments:

‘I feel that the mentoring role has given me so much more than I've put in. I have my confidence back and I feel like a person- not just a "Mum”.

Full training and support will be given throughout the role and you will also have access to appropriate City of York Council training courses.
