Festival of Youth

The Youth Council are organising another Festival of Youth in Rowntrees Park on the 16th July. We're hoping it will be bigger and better than last year. We are looking for young bands, dance and drama acts to perform, any groups that want to run a workshop or anyone that wants to have a stall to run activities, raise awareness of their group- or do some fundraising.

Download an application form and a poster to advertise the festival.

Carers Week

13 to 19 June

Carers Week highlights the vital work done by unpaid carers who look after someone else because of illness, disability, frailty or other health issues.

This year’s theme is ‘The True Face of Carers’ and will focus on what it is really like to be a carer in the UK in 2011. It is an opportunity to challenge stereotypes about carers and to remind people that is it is a tough responsibility that can fall on anyone.

Support Carers Week and take part in events organised by carers groups and charities in York.

Coast to Coast for the youth cafe!

Members of the Network 2 team took to the saddle in order to raise funds for the York Young People's Trust's youth cafe.

They rode 146 miles from coast to coast, across the country from Whitehaven, across the north Pennines, and finishing in Tynemouth. They completed the arduous ride over three days in March after encountering cold winds, rain and even snow!

It was hard going at times with steep hills and rough, muddy terrain, but the wildly beautiful scenery, the downhill stretches and the sense of achievement at the end of a tough day more than made up for it! There were punctures, chain problems, wrong turns and even a spectacular fall; all good experience for "next time". Watch this space!

Over £5000 was raised for the youth cafe which will open up in the city centre. It will be a place for young people to go to meet friends and chill out, and get advice, support and information. This is an exciting new venture and will be a great space for the young people of York.

You can still sponsor the team by ringing 01904 552442!

Sharing Care

Can you spare some time to support a disabled child?

Sharing Care is a short break (or respite) scheme for disabled children and young people. If you have spare time, from a few hours a week to a few days a month, to support a disabled child in your own home, we would love to hear from you.

Sharing Carers open their homes to disabled children when their families need a break from their caring responsibilities. Sharing Carers offer a safe and nurturing place for children to visit and can be from a variety of backgrounds and situations.

We provide training, ongoing support and a range of allowances.

For further information please go to the council website or contact us at sharingcare@york.gov.uk or on 01904 555699.

Workforce Development Unit

A new Workforce Development Unit (WDU) has been set up in the Adults, Children and Education Directorate within City of York Council. The new team has been created from the former Training and Development Unit for Children’s Services and ACE Adults Training Team.

Going forward the team has responsibility for:

  • establishing workforce development needs and training priorities across the adults and children’s workforce
  • supporting the children’s and adults’ workforce to become increasingly skilled, confident and responsive
  • commissioning high quality training and development opportunities

This change will not affect any arrangements you have already made for training or, in the short term, change the current systems such as training calendars and course bookings etc.

Find out more about the WDU online, by email or ring 01904 553017.
