Learning transforms Linda's life

Linda Harrison was inspired to return to learn after becoming a mum. Her dedication and commitment to learning is being recognised with a Regional Individual Learner Award as part of the 20th Adult Learners' Week 2011. Linda accessed funding through the Graduate Leader Fund which was made available to support the government target of having an Early Years Professional in every full day care setting by 2015.

Linda began volunteering at a playgroup and Pre-school Learning Alliance, which led to employment. Since then, Linda has completed her Level 3 in Childcare and Education and with help from the Graduate Leader Fund, is working towards her Foundation Degree.

York carer's unforgettable visit to Number 10

As part of Carers Week, Samantha was invited to represent the Young Carers Revolution, who work to raise the issues facing young carers, at a reception at Number 10 Downing Street.

Samantha is a remarkable young woman who has helped to care for her brother and mother since she was very young and for the last nine years she has been involved with the York Carers Centre. The centre supports young carers, aged eight to 18, who care for a relative with an illness, disability, mental health problem or a problem with alcohol or drugs.

During the visit to Downing Street Samantha was greeted by the Prime Minister and listened to a speech he made about the importance of the role unpaid carers play in society. "Arriving at Downing Street was very surreal. When we were going through security it was like being at the airport. It was an absolute honour; it’s not something I will forget."

You can learn more about unpaid carers like Samantha by taking online carer awareness courses.
